Access and services for disabled people

Tameside General Hospital continually reviews access for disabled people. If you require any specific or specialised assistance then please try to let the hospital know in advance of your visit.

Visual impairment

During core hours we have specially trained volunteers who can assist patients and visitors who have a visual impairment.

Our Guiders will meet and stay with the person during their stay at the hospital and assist them when they leave.

If you require this service please telephone during working hours 0161 922 5335 or 5332. Please allow a minum of 24 hours to allow us to organise this service for you.

Mobility impairment

Mobility ScootersWe offer a shopmobility type scooter scheme for patients and visitors with a mobility impairment.

The scooter volunteers will assist anyone who wishes to use this scheme

Monday to Friday – 9.00am til 5.00pmTo access this service you can:

  • arrive at either Hartshead South or North building entrance and use the scooters available
  • ring from the car park using your mobile and a scooter will come to your vehicle and escort you to your appointment
  • pre-book during office hours (Mon to Fri 9:00 am - 5:00 pm)

Wheelchairs are also available in the main hospital reception areas to aid transportation within the hospital.

Hearing impairment

For deaf and hard of hearing patients there is information available from Tameside Sign language for letter IInterpretation and Communication Services on 0161 342 3316 or 07966 545 271 or via Minicom on 0161 342 2586/257. All wards now have a portable loop system.

Disabled parking

As from 1st May 2012 Blue Badge holders will no longer be exempt from parking charges at Tameside Hospital.

Pay and Display Car Parks

Blue badge holders will receive an additional hour parking following the purchase of a pay and display ticket.


  • Hartshead South main entrance (22 spaces)
  • Hartshead Way (8 spaces in annex at side of Charlesworth Building)
  • Etherow Building (6 spaces)

Pay on Foot Car Parks

Normal tariffs apply, however if you take your parking ticket and blue badge to the car parking office (located on the ground floor, Charlesworth Building), the fee will be reduced by one hour.


  • Multi Storey Car Park
  • Fountain Street Car park (opposite the Ladysmith building)
  • Stamford Car Park
