Team: ISCAN Physiotherapy Team

Who are we?

We are a team of qualified physiotherapists and physiotherapy assistants working within the Integrated Service for Children with Additional Needs (ISCAN).

What do we do?

The Children’s Physiotherapy team provides assessment, treatment and care coordination for young people who are referred with long term and / or non-acute conditions which limit their physical ability and function, which are best met in the community setting.

We support families / carers whose children have additional needs including:

  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Neurological disorders
  • Congenital disorders
  • Learning difficulties
  • Syndromes
  • developmental delay
  • Coordination difficulties
  • Orthopaedic conditions i.e. talipes, torticollis, plagiocephaly
  • Conditions where mobility is affected

Treatment is based upon an assessment of the young person’s needs and the formation of an individualised approach to physical management to maximise physical potential. If the young person is receiving support from another of the ISCAN services, then we will work with other professionals from ISCAN to develop a joint therapy programme if appropriate.

Interventions may include:

  • Provision of home, nursery and school exercise and activity programmes
  • Individual or group therapy sessions in blocks of intervention
  • Assessment / provision and monitoring of specialist equipment i.e. standing frames, walking aids
  • Assessment / provision of specialist footwear and splints in joint orthotic and physiotherapy clinics
  • Education, training and / or guidance to relevant people involved in the young person’s care
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Gym sessions

All interventions are carried out respecting the wishes and feelings of the young person and in the context of the family’s home, recreational and educational environment.

If the young person is under 3 years of age, a referral to the ISCAN Physiotherapy Team may not be necessary. Where the referrer feels that the young person's difficulties are due to developmental progress, attendance at a Move and Play session at a local Children’s Centre may be recommended. This will enable family members / carers to gain ideas on how to promote the young person’s motor skills.  If there are still concerns following attendance at the group, staff at the Children’s Centre will refer to the ISCAN Physiotherapy Team explaining both the progress the young person has made as well as the difficulties they continue to experience. This information is very helpful to a Physiotherapist when deciding whether to offer an assessment.
