Child and Adolescent Behaviour Support Team

Team: Child and Adolescent Behaviour Support Team

What we do

We offer support and advice to families, school and carers around behaviours that challenge. We advise and develop strategies and plans on how best to support the young person.

Behaviours that challenge can arise for different reasons and may serve different functions or purposes. We believe that a person centred approach using the Positive Behavioural Support (PBS) model is the best way to support young people who display behaviours which challenge.

Challenging behaviours can be defined as

“Culturally abnormal behaviour(s) of such an intensity, frequency or duration that the physical safety of the person or others is likely to be placed in serious jeopardy, or behaviour which is likely to seriously limit use of, or result in the person being denied access to, ordinary community facilities” (Emerson 1995).

The PBS model focuses on teaching the young person more effective and acceptable behaviour than the challenging one. By doing this the behaviour that challenges is reduced.   In order to do this, we must understand and identify the functions and purpose of the behaviour and identify a new more acceptable behaviour to replace this function or purpose.

Where are we based and where do we work?

The team are based at Rowan House and Hollingworth Clinic and may also work in the young person’s home, school, residential or respite setting.

Who do we work with?

Young people with severe learning disabilities who have behaviours that challenge. The young person must be aged 4 to 18 years and be registered with a G.P. in Tameside or Glossop.

The team often work with other professionals such as Children’s Psychiatrists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Complex Health Nurses, Paediatricians, Social Workers, Epilepsy Nurses, Teachers and Clinical Psychologists.
