Tameside Supported Internship Project

The Supported Internship

The Supported Internship project is an employment based course open to students with a learning disability between the ages of 18 and 24 year old. It gives them an opportunity to learn work skills and build confidence within a real work setting alongside working colleagues.

Key to the ongoing success of the project is the investment from all partners involved in the project.  The Hospital provides for the students a Project Officer to oversee the project, an on-site classroom base, Trust wide and local Inductions, job placements, ongoing local and job specific training, exposure to completing job application forms and interview practice.  Tameside College, provides an on site tutor to support in achieving a career based qualification as well as additional support in learning work related tasks as well as ensuring the students follow a course of English and Maths if required, Pure Innovations provides travel training, Job Coaching, individual support throughout each placement and support for managers/staff in each area and Tameside Council fund the project.

10 trainees are recruited each year.  Following induction the students go on to complete three work placements within various departments across the hospital during their year long course.

After the supported placements finish many go on to gain paid employment, for some of the trainees within the hospital and for others with local employers in the area others choose to go on to further education or go into voluntary roles.

Amanda Bromley, Director of Human Resources at Tameside Hospital, said: “This partnership working between key organisations really can make a difference to young people’s lives and create opportunities for young people with a disability to take up paid employment and have careers. All the staff involved in this exciting project at Tameside Hospital are very supportive and play an important part in making this a success."

In June 2016 the project won the Public Sector category of The Skills for Business Awards.  The event  is an annual event celebrating the outstanding contribution that skills and learning make to businesses across Greater Manchester.
