Julie and Mena Soboljew will run side by side in Cardiff later this month to raise funds for a new £2 million Macmillan Cancer Unit which will help treat and support the 1,000 people of Glossop and Tameside who are diagnosed with the disease every year.

The mum and daughter team are taking part in the World Half Marathon Championships, which is being held at Cardiff University on Saturday, March 26, and will join Britain’s greatest distance runners Mo Farah and Paula Radcliffe, who have confirmed their attendance at the event.

Julie, who is a financial adviser at the family business Meteor Mortgages and Money Ltd of Glossop Road, Glossop - and a non-executive director at Tameside Hospital - decided to raise money for the Unit, which will be built at the Hospital, after attending the launch event last month.

She explained: “Every family has been touched by cancer and this new Unit will provide chemotherapy and haematology, outpatient care and an information centre and other non-clinical services under one roof. Mena is a final year student at Cardiff University studying to become a chiropractor. We have run together before and we both agreed the cause was too important not to support.”

They will be cheered on by hubby and dad Nick and the family dog Rupert and are busily spending the last few days before the event fundraising.

Tameside Hospital Chief Executive, Karen James says she’s so impressed with Julie and Mena’s support and dedication. “ We are so lucky to have people like them who are prepared to go the extra mile (quite literally) to help us build the Unit.”
