Patient Joy Clarke nominated consultant Dr Roy for one of the Trust’s who’s your hero awards after being so pleased with the ongoing care she has received from Dr Roy.
Joy has rheumatoid arthritis, a long-term condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in the joints and has recently transferred her treatment to Tameside Hospital after years of flare-ups. A flare-up can be difficult to predict, but with treatment it's possible to decrease the number of flare-ups and minimise or prevent long-term damage to the joints.
In her nomination Joy said, “Dr Roy and his wonderful nurse Katy go more than the extra mile, in fact I am amazed at what they do for me. I have never, in my whole life, met more compassion and help than I have received. They just don't give up on you and they genuinely want you to get better. I tell everyone how wonderful Tameside Hospital has been.”
Dr Roy was presented with his who’s your hero award by Trust Chief Executive Karen James OBE on Wednesday 19 February, who surprised him in his clinic. Karen congratulated him, saying, “it is always lovely to get such positive feedback from patients. You and your team should be very proud.”
The second nomination, this quarter, comes from Dawn Street, from Stalybridge, who says she has been absolutely “bowled over” by the care her daughter, Stephanie has received from Dr Ed Jude, our diabetes and endocrinology consultant and his team. Stephanie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes two days before her eighth birthday. That was 17 years ago, and she has always managed her condition well. Learning that she was pregnant was a dream come true, but early in her pregnancy she became quite ill and had to be admitted into our hospital. Dawn tells me; “Dr Jude had been to a conference in South Africa and landed at the airport to hear about Stephanie. He rushed straight to her bedside, transferred her to his care on Ward 46, and with his wonderful team managed the rest of her pregnancy until she was 34 weeks and an elective caesarean was decided best. Baby Aurora-Isla was born just one month ago, and she’s a happy and beautiful baby and her whole family are so grateful for the wonderful, outstanding care received.”
