Tameside Macmillan Unit fundraising appeal passes half million mark
21 October 2016

Thanks to the generosity and fantastic support from the local community the Tameside Macmillan Unit fundraising appeal has reached £600,000.

And, following a reduction in some estimated costs, the project is now one third of the way to reaching the revised £1.8 million target.

The centre is a joint venture between Macmillan Cancer Support and Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust to bring vital cancer treatment, care and support together under one roof for the first time at the hospital to support people affected by cancer across Tameside and Glossop.

A fundraising appeal was launched earlier this year to create a centre to provide outpatient cancer, a chemotherapy suite with six chairs and a private room for acute chemotherapy. Haematology services will be based at the unit, as well as a new Macmillan Information and Support Centre.

The centre will also include a palliative care consulting room, complementary therapy room, prosthesis-fitting area and Headstart service, where people can learn to wear scarves or hats as an alternative to wigs.

Since the appeal launched, fantastic fundraisers and kind-hearted supporters have been busy digging deep and taking part in some wild and wonderful events – from charity walks and head shaves to golf days and beer festivals - to help raise much-needed funds for the appeal.

Aggie Sheppard, Macmillan’s Area Fundraising Manager for Greater Manchester, said: “Thanks to the generous support from individuals, local businesses and charitable trusts, we have raised a fantastic £600,000 towards the Tameside Macmillan Unit appeal.

“We are now one third of the way to reaching our goal to help transform the care and support given to people affected by cancer in Tameside and Glossop. However, we’ve still got a long way to go and we can’t do this on our own. We still need the local community to continue supporting this appeal and help us deliver this vital facility to ensure that no-one has to face cancer alone.”
