Tameside's popular hospital market which promotes healthy eating and shopping habits has won a national award.

NABMA (National  Association of British Market Authorites) awarded Tameside Council’s markets team the ‘Market Innovation of the Year’ title for their successful collaborative project with Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust on the popular monthly market at Tameside Hospital.

The market was set up in June 2015 and held on the last Tuesday of every month from 9am to 2pm for an initial three month trail. It proved so successful that is has become a permanent seasonal market from March to September with a Christmas market too.

Patients, staff and visitors at Tameside Hospital have warmly welcomed and benefitted from the sale of fresh, locally grown produce. Traders were handpicked to set up stall outside the main entrance to supply home grown fruit, vegetables, bread, cheeses, olives and preserves along with flowers, plants and gifts and regularly sell out, claiming it is their “best market”.

Other local authority market teams have made enquiries with a view to launching their own hospital markets in light of its success.

The recognition is the latest in a string of plaudits for the Tameside Markets team. In May market manager Nicola Martin was named Market Manager of the Year and the market has twice been named Britain’s Favourite Market as well as winning coach friendly and eco awards.

Tameside Council Executive Deputy Leader Cllr John Taylor said: “The joint project with the hospital has been all round success – it has enabled us to work together to promote both healthy eating and local shopping habits to patients, visitors and staff while also helping us to continue to support local traders.

“This latest accolade for our multi-award winning markets teams if further recognition of their drive, commitment, creativity and enthusiasm for continuing to move with the times and improve our offer to shoppers and local traders. Well done to all involved and thanks to local shoppers for your continued support.”

Tameside and Glossop Integrated Care NHS FT Chief Executive Karen James said: “I am delighted to see that our market is getting the recognition it deserves. Our patients enjoy it, the staff enjoy it and anyone that comes to the hospital on market day enjoys it too. It’s a fantastic way of bringing local people and local producers together – and, as most people live busy lives, it means people can stock up on essentials on buy little treats right outside the hospital doors.”
