Sister Collette Iles, who works for the Chaplaincy, and volunteer Malcolm Huddart, who helps patients around the site on mobile scooters, have been named as joint winners of Tameside Hospital’s latest Excellence in Care award.

They each received high street shopping vouchers and a certificate presented by Chair Paul Connellan.

Mr Connellan said: “This is recognition of what you do and that it makes a big difference and on behalf of the hospital thank you for all your time and effort.

Everything that you do is all part of the experience that people have here.”

Sister Collette, who is a Presentation Sister nun, was nominated by Dr Bath Hammersley, Consultant Obstetrican and Gynaecologist at Tameside Hospital, who said: “She is part of the fabric of the hospital. Wherever you go you see her visiting and supporting patients and families. She is known and loved by everyone and she is part of what is the very best about Tameside Hospital.”

Dr Hammersley added: “She is an unsung hero.”

Sister Collette said: “I like to do what I can, wherever I can, for whomever I can and as one of the founders of out order said ‘Go one step beyond’

“Lots of people in this hospital go one step beyond so this award is for them and not just me.”

Malcolm, 69, of Ashton, was nominated by a grateful patient, who said: “He is always helpful, pleasant, polite and nothing is too much trouble. Without his help I would not have been able to get to appointments on time.

“He is an asset to Tameside Hospital.”

Malcolm said: “This award is for all the good work that goes on at Tameside Hospital and not just me.”

Amanda Bromley, Interim Director of Human Resources, said: “These two individuals have been recognised as making a difference to patients and put patients at the heart of everything they do. This recognition is to say thank you for all your dedication to the people of Tameside.”

What is an Excellence in Care award?

The Excellence in Care Awards were launched in 2010 to recognise those members of staff and volunteers who have delivered the highest possible standards of care and demonstrated exemplary performance and an outstanding level of service delivery.

The award is given each quarter to the employee that has:

  • Particularly impressed with their attitude, behaviour and standard of work
  • Gone ‘above and beyond’ the call of duty in carrying out their role
  • Given their utmost in ensuring that Tameside is the local hospital of choice.

You can nominate a member of staff at Tameside Hospital for the ‘Excellence in Care’ award by visiting or completing a nomination form available at the hospital.
