“These interim appointments build on the work which we have been doing on the development of a Southern Sector partnership of hospitals of Tameside, UHSM and Stockport and reflects our partnership working with our neighboring hospitals.”

Karen James RGN BSc (Hons) MSC 

Acting Chief Executive and Senior Information Risk Officer, UHSM


Chief Operating Officer Karen James is currently the Acting Chief Executive, as former Chief Executive Julian Hartley has recently moved to a role at The Department of Health. Karen joined the Trust in June 2009. She was previously Executive Director of Operations and Service Improvement for Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.


She began her NHS career as a nurse, and worked in a number of nursing and general management roles in Greater Manchester hospitals before becoming Executive Director of Operations and Performance at The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, prior to moving to Aintree.



Brendan Ryan FRCSE FCEM                     

Medical Director, UHSM


Brendan has been with the Trust since 1987, and started work as an A&E consultant in 1992. As well as continuing his work in emergency care, as the Trust’s Medical Director, Brendan provides medical leadership to the Trust’s management board.


His special interest is in Emergency Medicine. He has been Medical Director at UHSM since 2000 and is a Board Member of theNHSNorth WestLeadershipAcademy.
