New CT scanner arrives at Tameside Hospital
09 May 2013

The low dose 160-slice CT scanner, which cost £500,000, is the most sophisticated available for adult patients in Greater Manchester.

Patients now benefit from a new waiting area, changing area and control room for the CT scanner.

Tameside Hospital NHS Foundation Trust’s Clinical Director of Radiology, Dr Ash Lama said: “Having two CT scanners is great news for our patients as it will mean waiting times for a CT scan will be dramatically reduced. The scanners will operate seven days a week and have extended hours from 8am to 8pm Mondays to Fridays.

“We can also now do more complex examinations such as Cardiac CT Angiography and Virtual Colonoscopy.  This means patients can have their diagnostic scans here atTamesideHospital, speeding up their treatment.”

For some patients it will also lead to a reduction in unnecessary invasive diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy and coronary angiography performed at distant hospitals. It will also mean larger patients will be able to be scanned atTamesideHospitalas the scanner has a wider circumference

Dr Lama added: “Demand for CT scanning has been increasing year on year and we are now much better placed to meet this demand.

“We don’t want patients to have to wait longer than is necessary and we certainly don’t want them to have to unnecessarily travel to other hospitals, which is why we have invested in another machine.

“We are confident that having two scanners, we can now reduce waiting times for patients by around two to three weeks.

“With access to a second scanner, we are confident that all our inpatients will be scanned within 24 to 48 hours of receiving the referral.”
