Vince Sutton, from Mossley, was involved in an accident at work back in January and his foot could not be saved. He faces months of repair work to heal the wound and will ultimately have a prosthetic foot fitted.

Unbeknown to her husband, Vince’s wife Carol contacted his belovedManchesterCityto ask if there was anything they could do to cheer him up.

Carol said: “Vince had just got tickets for City’s games against Manchester United andLiverpool, and he was so excited about taking our fifteen-year-old son, Liam.

“He was gutted to miss the matches so I contacted City to see if they could do anything. I thought they might just send a card or something, so I was delighted when we found out Mike Summerbee was planning on visiting him.”

Liam was supposed to join the visit but was struck down by a stomach bug.

Vince, 47, said: “It was such a disappointment to miss out on the matches after what has been a really hard time.

“I got a real shock when Mike walked in, it made my day. I’m a huge City fan and just couldn’t believe I was chatting to Mike Summerbee about all the latest football news.”

Mike spent time chatting with Vince about the beautiful game, as well as telling stories from Mike’s past, including his time living with fellow footie legend George Best and his part in classic film Escape to Victory.

“Vince has shown great strength and has the right frame of mind to get over what’s happened to him,” said Mike, who left Vince with signed programmes, as well as an invite to attend a game in the near future and meet some of the team.

“He’s an inspiration and I look forward to seeing him again, along with Liam, at a match soon.”
